If you read the last blog, you might have learned that owning a vintage truck can be very difficult. I have learned that it is extremely important to stay on top of the weekly maintenance of the truck. I always leave extra early for events because I sometimes never know if I will have issues with the truck. Unfortunately, I had to learn this the hard way.
The last time I had to learn this lesson was by far the most memorable. I was getting ready for a large birthday party event and wanted to arrive at the event significantly early for setup. My parents were visiting town and it was the first time my Dad got to see The Succ Truck in action!
When I first got the truck, I didn’t know how to drive a manual car. My Dad was especially worried about me driving an old manual car. With the help of my friends who love vintage cars, I learned the ins and outs of this truck! I was so excited to have my Dad drive The Succ Truck with me to his first event and prove to him that I learned how to drive this car!
We hopped into the truck and guess what? I was stalling at almost every stop light … I had no idea what was happening with the truck! I was so embarrassed and I could tell my Dad was concerned. I soon felt the stress start to build up inside.
To make things even worse just as I was telling him that I normally drive it so much better than this, the truck shuts off in the middle of a busy road! I was mortified! I looked at the gas meter and noticed I never filled the gas tank! My Dad had to walk down the road and get some gas for the truck in a container. We then tried to pour the gas from the container into the fuel tank, but the truck is so old the container would not fit. So here we are, in the middle of a busy road in Las Vegas, pouring gas into small succulent pots and dumping it into the tank. Yes, you read that correctly… dumping gasoline into small succulent pots.
I did a poor job of giving myself enough time to review the checklist of tasks I needed to get done this week. Also, I was more concerned about proving to my Dad that I was an awesome driver and got completely off task. This was a situation that really taught me how important it is to stay focused. Sometimes I get so concerned about other people’s feelings and thoughts towards me.
I think this applies to many things outside of this situation as well. If I can give any advice to a new business owner it would be to stay confident in your skills! While it’s okay to get nervous sometimes, don’t let that nervousness flood your thoughts. The more nervous I get, the more I tend to forget the most important tasks… like filling the gas tank. Don’t worry too much about the outside noise! Thankfully, we made it to the event right on time and my Dad was super supportive throughout the entire catastrophe. Lean into your support system for times like these!
