Do you ever have one of those weeks where absolutely nothing goes right? Well I’m here to tell you that you are not alone. This past week has been incredibly tough for the business. I’ll tell you a little bit about how it started. I start Monday morning by getting rear ended in The Succ Truck at a stop sign! A STOP SIGN. This was horrifying moment for me. I always assumed that this cute vintage car would never get hit because other drivers would drive more carefully around it. However, I was wrong. People still drive crazy and distracted.
This fender bender did not cause a ton of damage, but enough damage to cancel a big event I had over the weekend. Now I had a damaged truck, lost money in sales, a ton of extra plants, and spent my entire week looking for auto body shops that would fix this unique car.
In addition to all of this craziness, one of my favorite succulents was not doing well this week. This was a sign. This succulent had been so healthy this past year, never needed much attention and was normally growing like crazy. I was completely exhausted and felt like giving up on everything this week. I soon had absolutely no motivation. I could handle this situation a couple different ways but instead of blaming this on my terrible week, I took a deep breath in a started thinking about how I could turn this bad attitude around.
I looked at the succulent and really studied it. I noticed the leaves at the bottom were pretty sad but not sure if it was due to overwatering. Then I thought about how I hadn’t repotted this succulent at all in over a year. I took the succulent and gave it a new home with fresh soil and a larger pot. The next day I looked at the succulent and it was thriving. I thought to myself “Wow, that’s all it took? Simply repotting and giving the succulent a fresh start?”.
I thought about how this succulent had a terrible week like I did. I then decided to take on the rest of the week with a fresh start too. I spent the morning eating a good breakfast, watching my favorite shows and took a nice walk with my dogs. That afternoon I felt so much better and had way more energy to attack all the problems that arose throughout the week. I realized I wasn’t giving myself enough self-care and time to re-energize lately.
A big lesson I have learned this week is that running a business can be extremely difficult and disappointing at times. Sometimes there are things that happen to us that are completely out of our control. However, it is how you react to these moments that determine your success. These tough moments were taking a huge toll on me lately and I started to carry all these disappointments with me throughout the weeks, making it feel impossible to get anything done. Once I gave myself a little extra love, I was able to recenter and recharge myself to take steps forward. Succulents go through a similar stress and variability that we do in their daily lives. When you see a sad succulent, think to yourself how can you nurture this plant a little more. Study the plant before taking action and find the real root of the problem.
